2/25/13 Takedown Wrestling Media Dual Impact Index

Here's a guideline to what the numbers all mean:

Individual Rankings: The basic idea is an iterative one. Begin with all
wrestlers set to an even rating -- 100 in this case. Then, for each match wrestled, give each wrestler the value of their opponent's rating plus or minus a factor for winning or losing the match -- 30 by decision, 40 by major/tech-four, 50 by tech-five, 60 by fall. Total all of a wrestler's results, divide by the number of matches wrestled, and that's the end of a cycle. Then use those numbers as the start of the next cycle until you get the same results for each wrestler for two consecutive cycles.

Note: Wrestlers will not be listed unless either (a) they have competed in 4 team-scoring dates of competition if the team's entire schedule includes 13 or fewer such dates, 5 team-scoring dates of competition if the team's entire schedule includes 14 or more such dates, or (b) they have wrestled ten matches against wrestlers meeting criteria (a). If the wrestler meets criteria (b), and has not wrestled attached in a team-scoring event, they will be listed, but will not be eligible to be ranked.

Dual-Result Rankings: Based on results of dual meets only. The ranking is very similar to the Individual ranking, except that the factor is 30 points plus one point for each match the dual was won or lost by. Criteria point for otherwise-tied duals is not included in this figure.
MOV=points earned based on margin of victory
WL=points earned based on wins or losses

Tournament: Done based on the individual rankings, on a 21-17-14.5-13.5-11-10-7.5-6.5-3-3-3-3-2.5-2.5-2.5-2.5-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1 basis, to simulate non-bonus scoring at NCAA's.

Dual-Component Ranking (debuting here): Based on the Individual Ranking numbers, each team is compared side-by-side with each other team. Teams are given three points for their wrestler being ahead of another team's wrestler, plus one additional point for being 35, 45, and 55 points ahead, to signify major decisions, technical falls, and falls. Teams are scored based on the numbers of such comparisons won, with ties broken by head-to-head comparisons, and then by, if the teams are tied, dual-advancement tiebreak criteria.

BTW, for those wondering why Kelliher is ranked at 133 (and Graff will be at 141), in general, when more than one wrestler is eligible to be ranked at a weight, the most beneficial from a team perspective is taken, however, I will not rank a wrestler at more than one weight class, for obvious reasons. In this case, Graff is ranked in the same spot at both weights, but Kelliher would be ranked much better at 133, which is why Kelliher and Graff are ranked in the weight classes they are, rather than the ones they have been wrestling. (I goofed on that one last week, of course)

Re: 2/25/13 Takedown Wrestling Media Dual Impact Index

I'm sorry SHP but Most of us saw the Nat Duals. Surely you should have some sort of tweak when reality confronts statistics. With PSU loss to IA and IA performance at duals somehow it looks like OSU and PSU are over ranked . In fairness the individuals look better. they usually come in this time of year. It will be intersting to see what happens at B1G where some of these issue get resolved. What happens to the guys who lose in B1G at 125.provided semis are McD, Mega, Delgado and Thorn Triggas. The seeds will have a huge impact. I do believe McD gets the #1 due to last year Conf 1st. and confusion in the guys beating each other

I disagree with making any tweaks. While the ACTUAL results varied from this computerized simulation, the results aren't that far from the real thing. The numbers cannot account for all of the myriad complexities that go into any match - illness, injuries, energy levels, mental letdowns, etc. etc. etc. Afterall, if the computer got it right, then why wrestle the matches. This is only information, partly to satsify SHP's need to give us a ton of data :ugeek: , and partly for our need to absorb this stuff, nit-pick it to death, and find yet another thing to discuss/argue about. I love the fact that the paper results did not bear out in actual head-to-head matchups. What fun would there be in that?

SHP -

At 174#, I didn't see Weishoff of Oregon St. who qualified for NCAA's with 3rd place Pac 12 finish.

Did he not meet your criteria ?

With the matches he does have, where would he place at 174# ?

No, he did not meet my criteria.

Had he met the criteria, he would have been approximately 24th at 174 as of the 2/25/13 release. I have not done an update since, as the only matches have been Campbell/Chattanooga dual and the Pac-12 Championships. However, after the National Qualifiers, I make anybody who competed in the National Qualifier eligible regardless of their status to-date, and also will rank them regardless of whether other people on the roster are ranked ahead of them at the weight.
